Henry Burghardt Muehlbauer was born on June 15, 2012 and
has been taking the world by storm ever since. From the very
beginning, he has always had an enthusiastic spirit and has
always been interested in everything and everyone around him.
When he was a toddler living in Boston, he was fascinated
equally by the trains that ran outside our front window and the
ducks and geese that lived in the pond behind our apartment
building.
Henry was named for a dear family friend, Henrietta Vanderryn.
Although not related by blood, she served as a bonus
grandparent for Amy and her sister Katie. The bond between
the families continued, and years later, Harry’s great-grandson
Lee introduced Henry’s parents.
Henry’s Hebrew name, דלáß àוá( חChanon Mendel), honors his
four great-grandfathers. The name Chanon recalls his paternal
great-grandfather, Elchanon, an educator, Hebrew scholar,
writer and poet. The name Mendel is the Hebrew name of both
his maternal great-grandfather Siegfried, a watchmaker who
won several motorcycle races as a young man, and his paternal
great-grandfather on his father’s side Michael, a physician who
fled from Berlin to Brooklyn. The name Mendel also honors
Henry’s maternal great-grandfather Marshall, who had a keen
interest in science, just as Henry does.
We are so proud of the young man that Henry is growing up to
be. He is a playful and affectionate older brother to Eli, and he
shares a special bond with his cousins Ethan and Anna (maybe
it’s because his mom and their mom are identical twins, so
technically – from a genetic perspective – the cousins are
actually half-siblings).
Henry is a dedicated student, as well as an ardent fan of the
Mets and a committed fisherman. He and his father will happily
get up at all hours of the morning in order to get out on the
water, something that never ceases to amaze his mom. Henry
gets his love of fishing and many of his best traits from his
paternal grandfather, Eric, whom we miss and remember every
day. We know that Henry will continue to work hard, be a loyal
friend, and take part in the essential work of tikkun olam,
helping to make the world a better place.
We have reached this milestone with the support of so many
people. To Henry’s grandparents Linda, David and Esther; aunts
Sarah and Katie, and uncles Evan and Mikael – thank you, and
we love you! To the TBI community – we are so grateful to be
part of this special place. In particular we would like to thank
Rabbi Mishkin, Cantor Childs, Josh Blumenfeld, Anya Morgulis,
and the TBI teachers and staff.
