Original cast member Laraine Newman has spoken
about her California Jewish roots. As a teenager she
enjoyed a post- high school year learning from
famed Jewish mime Marcel Marceau before she
spent 5 years on SNL. But I loved learning that a
decade ago, Laraine spent almost a year lovingly
preparing and planning for her youngest daughter’s
Bat Mitzvah.
Of course perhaps with Passover on the current
calendar, I couldn’t pass over Laraine’s best story
when she was reminiscing about a Seder in SNL
Studio 8H during its first year on the air. In between
the dress rehearsal and live performance, a hungry
group of SNL cast members, writers and band
members including Laraine, Gilda, Alan, Paul
Schaffer, and Al Franken had some time when Alan
Zweibel asked—and I quote—
